What the Comanche County Court Clerk Handles

The Court Clerk is the record keeper for the District Court. The job runs far beyond storing paper. It touches money, staffing, and the day-to-day flow of cases through the building.

  • Records, files, and maintains all District Court proceedings.
  • Collects fines, fees, costs, and forfeitures tied to cases.
  • Provides personnel to the District, Associate, and Special Judges.
  • Maintains filing and disposition statistics for the court.
  • Protects the integrity of District Court case files under state law.

Comanche County sits in Oklahoma's District 5, and the county reports seven judges on its judicial staff. The Court Clerk's deputies support those District, Associate, and Special Judges as cases move through hearings and trials.

One limit catches filers off guard. The Court Clerk will not print pleadings, motions, briefs, or other papers to a judge's office on a filer's behalf.

Note: Bring or e-file your own copies for the judge, since the Court Clerk does not print a filer's documents to chambers.

How to Request a Certified Copy

A certified copy carries the clerk's authentication and is required for many official uses. A plain copy works for reference but is not the same thing in court or at an agency.

The county explains the process on its Comanche County records request page.

  2. Download or pick up the records request form from the county website.
  3. Complete the form with the case number, party names, document titles, and your contact details.
  4. For a mailed request, enclose a money order or cashier's check payable to Comanche County Court Clerk plus a self-addressed stamped envelope. Personal checks and cash are not accepted by mail.

Criminal Records From the Comanche County Court Clerk

Criminal record requests follow stricter rules than general copies. The Criminal Office asks for a written letter with the subject's full name, date of birth, Social Security number, offense date, and case number when known. A $10 search fee applies to each request, and copy fees are added on top. The county sets out these steps on its criminal records page.

Criminal copies run higher than the general rate. The first page costs $1.50, and each additional page costs $0.50.

One rule trips up many people. The Criminal Office does not take requests by email.

Note: Criminal record and background-check requests must come in by mail or in person, since the Comanche County Criminal Office does not accept them by email.

Marriage Licenses at the Comanche County Court Clerk

Marriage licenses run through the Court Clerk, not the County Clerk. The Small Claims office in Room 205 handles applications and recording. Comanche County no longer performs courthouse marriages, so couples bring their own officiant and witnesses. The license fee is $50, reduced to $5 with proof of premarital counseling. The county outlines the steps on its marriage license page.

Both applicants must show current ID, and their names must match the application. Oklahoma law at 43 O.S. § 5 sets the rules for proving full legal name and age. After the ceremony, the signed license must be returned within 30 days to Room 205 for recording.

A short checklist keeps an application moving:

  • Choose a wedding date and an officiant before applying.
  • Line up two witnesses who are at least 18 years old.
  • Bring current photo ID for both applicants.
  • Allow at least 72 hours before issuance if either party is under legal age.
  • Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for a mailed application.

E-Filing Through the Comanche County Court Clerk

Comanche County shifted to Oklahoma's statewide e-file system. Attorneys and state agencies file electronically at efile.oscn.net. The county notes that the tool is currently open to those filers, not the general public.

The e-filing details sit on the county's Comanche County e-filing page.

The same page links the e-file FAQ and the statewide help desk. Filers can reach support at eFilingSupport@oscn.net or 877-532-0114.

E-filing is not a public document search. Members of the public still read dockets and case detail on OSCN and then request copies from the Court Clerk.

The County Clerk Is a Separate Office

Comanche County splits its record duties between two elected offices. The Court Clerk keeps court cases. The County Clerk, Carrie Tubbs, keeps land and county records such as deeds, mortgages, liens, and plats. Court and marriage files are not stored there.

For property and recording questions, the Comanche County County Clerk is the right office. Sending a deed question to the courthouse case counters only adds a delay.

Both offices share the same courthouse address on SW 5th Street in Lawton. The difference is the record, not the building. Case files, dockets, and certified court copies stay with the Court Clerk, while titles, liens, and recorded instruments stay with the County Clerk.
